Breaking her silence on the killing of top Maoist leader Kishenji,Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said security forces had given him and his followers three days to surrender, but they instead opened fire, resulting in the gunbattle that killed him.

With rights activists claiming that Kishenji was killed in a fake encounter,Mamata said: “The Naxals fired a total of 1,000 rounds. It could have caused the death of at least 500 people who live in adjoining villages. The police told me they had given them three day but they did not pay heed. So our policemen had no other option but to fire back.”

Addressing a rally in support of party candidate Subrata Buxi, who is contesting the November 30 bypoll for the Kolkata South parliamentary constituency, the chief minister said the Naxalites had gathered to carry out acts of sabotage in the state.

“The police told me they wanted to target me and other senior leaders. They also had plans to carry out sabotage at Metro railway stations,at railway stations such as Howrah and Sealdah. They are always crowded. I shudder to think of it,” Mamata said.

Criticising rights activists, she said: “When a common man is killed, they never take out any rally. Does a common man have no human rights? Please don’t teach me about those rights.”

Asking Maoists to give up violence,Mamata said: “There is no point in bloodshed. That will not lead to development. I appeal to you,lay down arms. We will give you all help.”
