In an attempt to curb ragging on the campus,Jadavpur University (JU) expelled three students found guilty of ragging. This is the first time in the universitys history that it has taken such a step.
The students Abhiram Sarkar,Suvendu Biswas and Suvodeep Das were found guilty of ragging their juniors on September 4 at JU main hostel. On September 15,the anti-ragging committee had recommended their expulsion. Today, the Executive Council, the highest decision-making body of the varsity, decided to go ahead with the expulsion.
The university authorities, meanwhile, said that more punishments will follow. Some students tried to disrupt the investigation by pressurising the students to change their statements. We are looking into this and more punishments may follow, Ghosh said.
Earlier, the first-year students had submitted a written complaint to the Dean of students,Rajat Ray,but later they back-tracked saying nothing had happened. After this the university formed the committee to look into the issue. Pinaki Bhattacharya,a professor of chemical engineering, and Abhijit Roy from Film Studies department, probed the incident. The students have been accused of physically and mentally harassing their juniors in the hostel.
In 2008,the university suspended a few students for their involvement in ragging. Then action was taken against 25 students for ragging a first-year student of architecture.
Earlier,a number of students faced academic suspension. But this is the first time the varsity has cracked the whip by expelling the students. This decision we hope can act as a deterent, said an executive council member.
Meanwhile, the Federation of Engineering Technology Students Union (FETSU) has decided to oppose the decision. We will call a general body meeting of the union on October 5 to decide how we will oppose the decision of the university administration, said Biswajit Mondal, general secretary of FETSU.
