Include Tagore in list of UGC social thinkers
State Higher Education Minister Sudarshan Roychowdhury has written to Union Minister for Human Resource and Development Kapil Sibal,urging him to include the name of Rabindranath Tagore in the University Grants Commissions (UGC) list of epoch-making social thinkers of India. The state higher education minister said that Tagore should be included in the list and his 150th birth anniversary,which starts in May,is an appropriate time for his inclusion into the elite list. The minister also urged the UGC to start centres for Tagore studies in some universities.
On commission from bus tickets,HC seeks govt reply
The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the state transport department to file a report on the prevailing system regarding the payment of commission from ticket sales to drivers and conductors of private buses . The order was passed in response to a PIL filed by advocate Tanmoy Goswami in September 2007,seeking an order to scrap down the commission system for drivers and conductors of private bus and minibus. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Mohit S Shah and Justice Kalyan Joyti Sengupta observed that there while there is a prescribed limit on the number of passengers that could be taken onboard a bus,the government as well as the transport department did enforce it. The transport department has been asked to file a report within three weeks.
