The government circular disallowing leave today when a nationwide 24-hour industrial strike was under way by the Left backed trade unions made an impact at state-run hospitals where the attendance was more than the usual days.
The percentage of those reporting to work hovered between 91 and 96 per cent at almost all city-based medical colleges; the attendance percentage here is usually 70-80 per cent. In district, sub divisional, primary and block primary health care centres, too, the number of people reporting to work was around 70 per cent, way above the every day attendance of around 50 per cent. The state health headquarters Swasthya Bhavan logged in around 88 per cent attendance,a big jump from the usual 65-66 per cent.
This year, following the Chief Ministers instructions, the hospital authorities arranged accommodation at various state-run hospitals for doctors and staff who live outside the city.
According to the statistics provided by the health department, the attendance percentage during bandhs called either by the ruling party or the Opposition in the past years used to be poor never crossing 20-25 per cent. The hospital services would virtually collapse, with only a few doctors, nurses and paramedical staff turning up. Most critical operations were cancelled and there were no Group D staff. The outpatient department would almost be non-functional While there were not many patients at the OPD today,it was not entirely deserted.
A patient, suffering from kidney ailments and had come from South 24 Parganas at SSKM Hospital, said there were enough doctors to look after him today.
