The Justice Shyamal Sen Committee, set up by the new state government to determine the jurisdiction of the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA),submitted its report to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tonight.

The report is confidential and no official has disclosed its contents. Late in the evening,Mamata confirmed that she had received the report from the committee.

The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha has demanded 396 mouzas from Terai and Dooars regions to be included in the GTA.

GJM members, however, were not made part of the final decision-making body as they are stakeholders in the issue. All eyes are now on whether their demand has been incorporated in the committee report.

Chief secretary Samar Ghosh confirmed that he had received the report, but did not reveal further details. It was learnt that elections for the GTA will be held in July.

The panel recently concluded its final meeting, which was attended by GJM representatives who submitted their research documents along with voters’ lists of the mouzas as demanded by Justice Sen. However,GJM members said they had not been consulted on how many mouzas would be included.

GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said,“Keeping in mind the interests of the people of that region,we hope that Justice Sen includes 396 mouzas of Terai and Dooars.”
