Toughening its stand against the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, which has enforced an indefinite bandh in Darjeeling since August 3 demanding a separate Gorkhaland state, the West Bengal government Thursday said it will execute the pending arrest warrants against the Morcha leaders now. More than 250 GJM leaders, including its president Bimal Gurung and general secretary Roshan Giri, have criminal cases registered against them.
We will take action against all unlawful activities in the hills. And to ensure peace,we will execute all the old arrest warrants there, Home secretary Basudev Banerjee told reporters after attending a meeting of the top state officials presided over by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Earlier, before leaving the Writers Buildings,Mamata said she has received a report from the home secretary who returned to Kolkata from Darjeeling after a three-day visit.
Chief secretary Sanjay Mitra, while briefing the media about the latest situation in Darjeeling, said the government has written to the GTA Sabha to elect their next chief executive as Bimal Gurung has vacated the post. Mitra said the government would take punitive action against those employees who did not attend office during the strike. We have taken steps to
ensure government offices
remain open. If needed,we will provide protection to those who want to come to office, the chief secretary said.
Mitra also regretted the inconvenience caused to people in Darjeeling due to the bandh. We condemn the bandh. We are committed to upholding the order of the HC that has asked the state to maintain normalcy in the hills, Mitra added.
