The shutters of Flurys the iconic Swiss confectionary on the Park Street has been brought down indefinitely following Tuesdays devastating fire at the Stephen Court building in which 24 people lost their lives and an equal number of people are still missing.
Set up in 1927,the legendary tearoom located at the ground floor of now partially blackened heritage building remained unscathed by the inferno though. While announcing its decision, the press release issued by the management of Flurys stated: Flurys is completely safe. We are cooperating with the fire brigade and our teams are helping them.
Though the reason behind the managements decision is not known, the scale of Tuesdays tragedy has left a scar on the minds of the people who frequented the place for its Viennese coffee, blackforest, rum ball and others.
The trauma and theatre of death and destruction have made many feel that the Flurys experience will never be same again. Jewellery designer and filmmaker Arjun Chakrabortys wife Nilanjana is one of them.
A regular at the Flurys, she says,I would never be able to come to terms with the fact that this was the building where so many people died.
Adam Rumbach,a tourist from USA,said it would be impossible for him to sit back and relax in the legendary tearoom. It will give a cloistering feeling, sitting there and sipping tea, says Rumbach.
The officials of Flurys, meanwhile, announced that the confectionarys other outlets will continue to function.
Before this,Flurys had been closed down for about five months in August 2004 for renovation and redesigning.
Flurys is a lifestyle in itself. People who frequent the tearoom will definitely miss out on the experience of sitting by the window and watch Park Street in all its splendor, even if the tea room remains closed for three days, two weeks or six months, says Shaun Kenworthy, former chef of Park Hotel who was associated with the confectionary shop and a regular at the tearoom.
Kenworthy, however, feels that people will throng Flurys once it reopens.
I will miss the chicken omlette, chicken envelope all my blossoming of love and separations have happened there. Flurys is a part of my journey as an individual, says filmmaker Sudipto Chattopadhyay,an avid Flurys fan.
