Speaking in New Delhi after receiving the award, the Class IV student recalled his experience during the operation. “When Operation Sindoor began against Pakistan, soldiers came to our village. I thought I should serve them. I used to take milk, tea, buttermilk, and ice for them daily. I feel great to be awarded. I had never dreamt of it,” Sharvan said. (Express Photo)
A simple act of compassion from a border village has earned national recognition for 10-year-old Sharvan Singh of Punjab’s Ferozepur district, who was among the 20 children honoured with the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar by President Droupadi Murmu on Friday. The young boy was awarded for displaying exceptional courage and patriotism during Operation Sindoor in May, when he selflessly served Indian Army personnel deployed in his village close to the India–Pakistan border.
Sharvan Singh, a resident of Chak Tara Wali village in the Mamdot area, lives barely two kilometres from the India–Pakistan border.

Reacting to the honour, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and BJP Punjab president Sunil Jakhar congratulated the boy, calling it a matter of immense pride for the state.
Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann also posted on X,” It is a matter of great pride for Punjabis that today the Hon’ble President of India conferred the ‘Rashtriya Bal Puraskar’ on 10-year-old Shravan Singh, a resident of our district Ferozepur. Following the teachings given by our Gurus, the service rendered by Shravan Singh during Operation Sindoor—by bringing tea, water and food from his home for the soldiers—deserves the highest appreciation. I salute the child’s courage and spirit of patriotism towards the nation.”
In a post on X, Jakhar said, “For displaying exceptional courage during Operation Sindoor, 10-year-old Sarvan Singh of Punjab was conferred the National Bravery Award by the Hon’ble President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu. This is a matter of immense pride for Punjab. I extend my congratulations to the child and salute his spirit of patriotism.” He also shared a video of Sharvan being honoured at the ceremony.
During the military deployment in May, Indian Army personnel were stationed in and around the fields near Sharvan’s village. Despite his young age and the tense situation along the border, Sharvan made it a daily routine to carry refreshments from his home to the soldiers, forging a strong bond with them. His quiet but consistent service earned him admiration from the troops.
In recognition of his efforts, the Army had earlier honoured him as the ‘Youngest Civil Warrior’, while the Army’s Golden Arrow Division also announced support for his education.
Sharvan is son of Sona Singh, a farmer who also runs a small dairy business, and Santosh Rani. Both parents had earlier said that they fully supported their son’s decision to help the soldiers and expressed pride in his courage and sense of duty. Sharvan, inspired by the soldiers he served, now dreams of joining the Armed Forces one day.
