The violence left three people dead, including an ISF worker.
On June 15 which was the last day of filing nominations, ISF and Trinamool Congress workers allegedly clashed in Bhangar's Bijoyganjganj Bazar. (Express Photo) Indian Secular Front (ISF) MLA Naushad Siddiqui received a seven-member security cover on Sunday afternoon, days after he moved the Calcutta High Court to request Z-category cover in light of the violence ahead of the panchayat elections in the state. On Tuesday, the High Court had ordered the Centre to provide security to the Bhangar legislator.
Citing threats to his life following the violence in Bhangar in South 24 Parganas during the filing of nominations for the panchayat elections, Siddiqui had earlier sought Z-category security from the Centre and the state government. When didn’t get any response, he moved the High Court.
According to reports, Central paramilitary forces personnel reached his house in Furfura Sharif village in Hooghly district. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, the lone MLA from ISF said that he does not yet know the level of security he has received.
“Despite notifying the state and central governments, I didn’t get the security and I had to approach the High Court. The Calcutta High Court directed the Central Home Department to ensure my safety. Accordingly, a seven-member team of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) from the Central Home Department arrived at my house and took charge of my security. It is not yet clear which category of security has been given to me. The next hearing in the case is on Monday in Calcutta High Court. Maybe, I will know the details there,” he said.
