FOR THE first time, the CPM has decided to make the last day of the party’s Plenum open to the media.
Confirming this, politburo member Mohammad Salim said, “For the first time in the party’s history, we will be opening the Plenum to the media. This will allow the masses to view what the Plenum is about.”
Senior party leaders said this was an attempt to make the party more attractive to the youth. “We have to focus on bringing in younger people in the party,” said Salim.
“We will look to immerse ourselves in people’s struggles in novel ways. For instance, almost every city in the country today has designated areas where the youth congregate to meet contractors and look for work. The CPM must be present in such areas and give those people voices. New leaders will emerge through such struggle,” party general secretary Sitaram Yechury said on Monday.
