Three unidentified miscreants shot dead a milk trader Shyam Sundar Popat in a crowded market place near Burrabazar on Saturday night. The incident has triggered panic among the businessmen in Kolkatas central business district.
A resident of Golf Green,Popat had a shop at Jamunalal Bajaj Street. He was going to Kalakar Street after closing shop for the day when unidentified miscreants shot him and fled the area.
Local people rushed him to Vishuddhananda Hospital,where he was declared brought dead. Though the murder took place in full public view,no one dared to give a statement regarding the incident. The motive of the murder could not be ascertained. Police suspect Papot was killed as he tried to resist the miscreants who attempted to rob him. A mobile phone,and Rs 30,000 was recovered from the spot. The victims family members also could not give any lead to the police. The businessman was originally a resident of Gujarat. He had come to West Bengal few years ago and had settled here. Police are looking for some local rowdies.
In another incident,three goons attacked a couple and snatched away gold jewellery. The couple Amit Rungta and wife Jyoti were at a shop on Hariram Goyenka Street near Posta when three bike-ridden miscreants came and attacked Jyoti with a knife.
They tried to snatch her gold chain. After facing resistance from Amit,the goons stabbed him in his hand and snatched his finger ring and fled from the spot. A complaint has been lodged with the police,though no arrests have been made so far.
