After making action adventures like Transporter 2 and The Incredible Hulk,French director Louis Leterrier is back with a remake of the Greek mythological epic,Clash of The Titans (COTT). In an e-mail interview withDebesh Banerjee,he talks about the movie and what went into its making
From fantasy to action dramas, and now on to a Greek mythology how do you manage such a varied graph as a director?
I keep asking myself the same thing too. I love taking risks and experimenting with scripts that excite me,and once I am passionate about something, there is no looking back. I love fantasies because they are escapist movies, both fun and adventurous at the same time.
For instance,COTT has everything from heroism,to myths,to romance. Filming was exhilarating. But talking about different subject-matters,I am still exploring new dimensions. Take a look at my first film,Danny the Dog and COTT and you will trace lot of changes in my style since then.
Why attempt a remake of the 1981 movie by Desmond Davis? How different is your treatment?
I am a great fan of the original movie. Desmond Davis was truly a great director. I think I saw the movie before Star Wars, and it was a wow experience. From that very moment,I wanted to make my own version, but I didnt want to do it the same way. The only way to make it mine was to personalise it. I had brain storming sessions and thought of each and every thing I could do to create my own version of it. I can assure you this movie will propel you into a mythological world of epic proportions. To rewrite a screenplay and incorporate the elements I had visualisedlike creating a different universe, creating relationships that can bloom or become complicated was no mean task. Im very happy with this version.
What kind of background went into putting this story together?
Apart from the human characters, the film also has 12 mythical creatures, like the winged Pegasus and the deadly Medusa. Creating these creatures involved special visual effects. Besides these larger-than-life beasts, breathtaking vistas spanning the depths of hell to the heights of Mount Olympus and battles between man and the gods will grab audiences from the first scene and take them on a wild,3D ride through ancient Greece.
What were some of the challenges of putting the film together?
I was working with a cast and crew of 800 people. I didnt want to rely entirely on digital technology for the movie. We clearly had to have digital mythological creatures, but when it came to the world the characters inhabited,we wanted to be largely real whenever possible. It was challenging but it was also very exciting.
3D as a medium has not gained so much currency among directors. You are still releasing the film in 3D worldwide. Why?
Converting the movie into 3D added incredible depth to each scene and enhanced the nuances of the story. I was also sceptical initially, but when I did a test run the result was unbelievable. It looked exactly like what it was on the set. I loved the interactivity it offered.
