Congress leaders react

Rail Minister Adhir Chowdhury said it has been the trend in the state.

‘Sudipta Sen had bought a painting by the CM for Rs 1.86 crore. Does she think she is Picasso?’

Rail Minister Adhir Chowdhury said it has been the trend in the state. “These small savings companies have always been patronised by the ruling party against huge donations to the party fund. Previously it was the CPM which had supported the inception and growth of these chit fund companies, and now it is the TMC which is playing even bigger role. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee keeps on harping that she runs her party on the proceeds of sales of pictures painted by her. Sudipta Sen had bought a painting by the CM for Rs 1.86 crore. Does she think she is Picasso that her paintings would fetch so much money? And only one art connoisseur in the whole world seems to know the true value of the pictures painted by Mamata,” he said and added that there was a definite nexus between these cheaters and the government. “Now she can’t shake off responsibilities just by saying he is somewhere in the north. At other times, she is so particular about the whereabouts of everyone and now she has no idea about Sudipta Sen?” Chowdhury said.

‘The monetary part should be investigated by SEBI; CBI would look into the criminal aspect’

Pradeep Bhattacharya, president,West Bengal State Congress Committee said they demanded an investigation by SEBI and CBI. “The monetary part should be investigated by SEBI and CBI would look into the criminal aspect of it,” he said. He added that the letter written to the CBI by Sudipta Sen which allegedly contains the names of several TMC leaders who had been benefited in monetary terms should be made public through newspapers. “We also demand a white paper be published by the state government with the details of the existing chit fund companies and what the state government plans to do about those. We are apprehending serious problems in the near future which can give rise to severe law and order disorder,” he said.

‘Even selling fixed assets would cover fraction of the amount’

Congress leader and Calcutta High Court lawyer Arunava Ghosh said there was no way it can be retrieved. “Even if the fixed assets of the group are sold to repay investors, there would be recovery of a fraction of the amount defalcated and that too after a painful lengthy litigation process,” he said, citing the example of scam around Sanchayita chit fund company in the past.
