A body of an unidentified person was found in the chamber of an elevator inside a three-storied under-construction building near Taltala in central Kolkata.

The body, which was found at 8 am by the caretaker of the building,Shibaprasad Ponda, was in a decomposed state.

Ponda said: “Initially,I thought that the stink is either coming from the garbage that is regularly dumped by the table fan manufacturing unit on the first floor or a rat must have died there. On Wednesday evening, when the smell became stronger,I went to sprinkle some bleaching powder and I tried to see the source of the foul smell. In the low light of my cell phone,I saw something that looked like a dead body.”

However, when Ponda told this to the locals sitting there they said that it might be the body of a dog. Ponda finally spotted the body on Thursday morning.

According to the police, the body had been there for at least 48 hours. It had marks of a deep head injury.

Ujjwal Ghosh,a local resident, said that on August 17,the day before the Assembly by-polls,a group of Trinamool Congress supporters had gathered in the building and had a feast there.

“They took permission from the owner. They left the spot late at night and I was not present there since my duty is from 7 am to 9 pm,” said Ponda.
