Babus skip work after CM’s holiday remark

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s announcement at an election rally that there would be a holiday on Monday for government employees on the occasion of Muslim festival Shab-e-Barat,triggered considerable confusion

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s announcement at an election rally that there would be a holiday on Monday for government employees on the occasion of Muslim festival Shab-e-Barat,triggered considerable confusion among babus at Writers’ Buildings with a good number of them choosing to play truant.

Shab-e-Barat has been listed as a “sectional” (optional) holiday for the babus for June 25 and it is the Muslim employees who avail of this holiday.

Mamata, however, declared at the rally at Meenakha in North 24-Parganas district yesterday that there would be a holiday on June 24 to mark Shab-e-Barat.

Consequently,a good number of employees did not come to work, and quite a few, after enquiring from various sources, came late.

So far as members of the clerical staff, for example, are concerned, out of the total 510 employees,389 turned up. Even out of that more than 80 employees were late.

“Around 78 per cent employees were present today whereas the strength is usually 80-85 per cent. And some employees came late. I received some 50 phone calls from staff seeking to know if it was a holiday. There was so much of confusion,” Rupak Majumdar, secretary,PA association, told The Indian Express.
