Confusion and lack of information on new toll booths of Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway brought in long traffic snarls at the Sirhaul plaza, where collection of toll was allowed during non-peak hours by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday.
Despite being a weekend, long queues of vehicles were seen at the Sirhaul toll plaza on Sunday. The concessionaire,Delhi Gurgaon Super Connectivity Ltd (DGSCL),said the return of toll led to confusion among commuters, who had become accustomed to a free run.
The lack of information about the Udyog Vihar toll booths meant that commuters continued to pay only at the Sirhaul toll plaza. DGSCL has set up eight split toll booths on the road coming from Udyog Vihar.
After High Court directions,DGSCL introduced 2×7 split tolling configuration on Gurgaon to Delhi side,2×6 split tolling configuration on Delhi to Gurgaon side and added eight toll collection points on the Udyog Vihar Road. The additional 21 toll lanes increased the total lanes from 32 to 49.
On Friday, the High Court allowed the concessionaire to collect toll from commuters while allowing a free run from 8.30 am to 10 am and from 5.30 pm to 7 pm. The next hearing in the matter is on October 3.
A DGSCL spokesperson said the concessionaire has taken several initiatives to ensure a smooth traffic flow. For better traffic management,we have added 50 staff at the Sirhaul toll plaza taking the tally to 50 lane attendants and 80 toll collectors. To encourage commuters to use the Udyog Vihar toll plaza,we have distributed leaflets and put up banners in the area, the spokesperson said.
He said Traffic Police has been requested to deploy more personnel to penalise errant drivers.
