Undertrial flees from new court complex

An Undertrial escaped from the judicial lock-up at the new district court complex in Saket on Friday,The police,however,managed to catch two other undertrials who made an escape attempt at the same time.

The police identified the accused as Riyaz Khan,a resident of Sangam Vihar.

The police sources said the three undertrials were brought back after the hearings to the lock-up at 2.30 pm after which they escaped. The three allegedly got out through a window in the lock-up,whose screws they had previously loosened.

Police said Khan is facing trial in a 2006 murder case. Among the other two,Nadeem Javed is facing trial on charges of receiving stolen property and provisions of the Arms Act,while Rohit Sharma faces charges of theft. An FIR has been registered at the Saket police station against the three under Section 224 IPC (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension). Saket police station SHO said,“Searches are being conducted all over the city. He will be caught soon.”

Delhi Police PRO Rajan Bhagat said,“We had written to the authorities about the lack of adequate security and infrastructure to house the undertrials,but there has been no response so far.”

The undertrials are at present kept in a makeshift judicial lock-up in the Saket court complex as a permanent one is still under construction.
