Artist Manisha Parekh’s solo exhibition at Nature Morte is titled “Spinning Secrets,” because she “wants the viewer to interpret the works for themselves.” The exhibition comprises more than 20 works — soft sculptures, paintings and graphite on paper among others.

Parekh retains her fascination with organic textures but the patterns in her works are now more dispersed. In several pieces, she has taken forward concepts introduced in previous works. In the soft sculptures Lobster and Jelly-Fish,she uses leatherite textile to create artwork that is reminiscent of the beanbag work she had exhibited at a group show at The Stainless in March. “I felt like taking that work forward. I never take assistance, but for this I worked with a tailor and process of interaction was interesting,” says Parekh,44.

The show is representative of Parekh’s varied oeuvre. In Animal she has the dense layered textures and in Spinning Time she entangles jute ropes to give them the appearance of calligraphic wall reliefs. The abstracts in her graphite-on-paper series Memories and Places give an impression of emerging landscapes.

The colours black and white, meanwhile, continue to dominate Parekh’s palette. “I like the monochrome, but there is colour too,” she smiles, shifting her glance to Pomegranate Bloom,in which bright red ribbons, some of them knotted, sprout on boards layered with handmade paper. “Here, red represents happiness,” she says.

She takes comparisons with artist parents Madhvi and Manu Parekh, and Nasreen Mohammedi, her teacher at MS University,Baroda,in her stride. “I’m honoured if there are any comparisons, there might be deeper influences with regard to the sensibility,” she says.

The exhibition at Nature Morte is on till October 16. Contact: 29561596
