What’s it about? Going by the first few episodes of Chhanchhan, one thing is certain: saas bahu sagas still remain a big draw for Indian television programming. The show is the story of Chhanchhan,a girl with traditional values and modern thinking, and Umaben,an orthodox woman who could go to any extent to follow tradition. It is a clash of the cultural conditioning of the young and the old. Looking at the storyline so far,one can foresee the two coming together as the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law respectively and the former opposing the latter’s views and opinions.

Who’s in it? The title role of Chhanchhan is being portrayed by Sanaya Irani, who became popular as Khushi on Star Plus’ Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?. Chhanchhan is a dog trainer by profession. Her family comprises her grandmother who is constantly worried about Chhanchhan’s marriage,a painter father,a history professor mother, and their dog Pooch Pooch. The show also marks the return of veteran actor Supriya Pathak to television. As Umaben, she plays the quintessential Gujarati lady who upholds her values and traditions. Farhan Khan plays the role of Manav,Umaben’s son and Chhanchhan’s future husband.

What’s hot? The highlight of the show is Sanaya Irani, who has been extremely popular on television. As Chhanchhan, she does full justice to the effervescent character. The first episode introduced Chhanchhan in a pair of jeans and kurti,a welcome change from the over-the-top Indianwear that often takes away from the character. The costumes aren’t garish and the production quality is high.

For the first time on Indian television,we have an actress who is a dog trainer by profession. The show is a treat to pet lovers. Also, the dialogues are realistic and the show is low on melodrama.

What’s not? The bold and outspoken nature of Chhanchhan is nothing new. Every second show on TV starts off with a girl who is modern in her approach and traditional in her values and wants to fight for the rights. The only way Chhanchhan can be different is if the instances are new and characters are written better. So far,the plot looks predictable. Some of the characters are stereotypical, especially Chhanchhan’s friends, who are a giggly lot. Farhan as Manav is awkward in his dialogue delivery and expressions.

Should you be watching it? Though not a novel concept,it seems like a vibrant show so far. Watch it for the promise it offers, and the four-legged creatures who are an absolute delight to watch.
