The final count: over 500 held for poll code violations

Over 300 cases were registered and over 500 arrested in incidents relating to violence,bootlegging,brawling and defacement of property reported in the Capital since election notification on March 23.

Over 300 cases were registered and over 500 arrested in incidents relating to violence,bootlegging,brawling and defacement of property reported in the Capital since election notification on March 23. On the upside,no incidents of booth-capturing were reported in the city on poll day; neither were incidents of related to distribution of money to voters.

After the Election Commission came up with strict guidelines against putting up election posters,banners and the use of loudspeakers,around 335 cases of violation relating to the Defacement of Property Act were registered this year in 11 districts. Around 7,600 hoardings,20,000 banners,26,000 posters and 1,200 graffiti were removed.

Taking strict action against poll code violators,875 vehicles and nine loudspeakers were also seized by the police.

Those involved in disturbing peace were immediately booked by the local police under Sections 107/151 (preventive action). Around 516 people were arrested in Delhi during this period,the maximum number reported from South Delhi – 252 arrests,followed by Southwest – 104.

Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said,“Various specialised units were deployed during the elections in the city and anything unusual was immediately investigated.”

Officers deployed on election duty at police stations had also been strictly warned against taking favours from any political party or leader. As an extra precaution,various rallies and public meetings of candidates were videographed as well,but no violations were reported,said an official.

More than 80,000 bottles containing 20,000 litres of liquor were seized by the police; around 30 vehicles carrying illegal liquor were also confiscated.

Officials said the cases registered during election season are being investigated and the Election Commission is being regularly apprised of the action taken by police.

The Delhi Police had formed a special team comprising Crime Branch officials especially for polling day (May 7),to investigate any incidents of violence and booth-capturing; however,except cases of bogus voting reported in Mehrauli,no other major incident occurred.
