Delhi-based Balani brothers — Aditya and Tarun — were barely teenagers when they burst into the independent music scene as formidable musicians. By 2006,they were busy performing across the country as members of popular band Advaita, but still nursed a dream of gaining formal training in music. The lack of good contemporary music schools in the country made the two look Westward and it was then that Berklee College of Music (Boston) happened.

After the course,Aditya and Tarun returned to India, got back to performing and also formed Global Music Institute (GMI) in Delhi. Come June, the two-year-old institute will be the first in the country to collaborate with Berklee College of Music and will teach their curriculum. A one-year performance certificate course and a two-year performance diploma are on offer that will include subjects such as music technology, ear training, world music and harmony, among others. “Last year,GMI represented India at Berklee International Networks conference held in Spain. They seemed interested in the India chapter and visited us in November,” says Tarun,27.

Apart from Aditya and Tarun, the faculty comprises Berklee College of Music alumni and other well-known musicians such as Rudy Wallang of Shillong-based band Soulmate. Application forms can be submitted till May 15. For more information, log on to globalmusicinstitute.in
