Sub-inspector suspended over custodial beating allegation

The man was walking back home with his sister at about 9 pm on October 14 when a neighbour allegedly harassed her.

A sub-inspector has been suspended and a departmental inquiry ordered into the alleged beating of 30-year-old man in Kotla Mubarakpur police station last week. The man who was injured following the beating had gone to complain against a neighbour who allegedly misbehaved with his sister.

DCP (South) Premnath said Wednesday, “Sub-inspector Naresh has been suspended and sent to the police lines. We have ordered an inquiry into the incident to ascertain what transpired in the police station and why he did what the complainant is alleging.” The man was walking back home with his sister at about 9 pm on October 14 when a neighbour allegedly harassed her, touching her inappropriately and using vulgar language, said sources. Her brother made a PCR call and after getting information, Naresh and other police personnel arrived at the spot, added the sources.

“The female staff did not ask my sister what her complaint was. They just took me and the other man into their vehicle and on the way to the police station, dropped him off. They took me inside the police station where Naresh alleged I was making up the complaint against the neighbour because I had a fight with him over a water issue,” the man said.

“When I protested this was not the case, he began screaming at me, telling me not to teach him the law. He ordered me to squat on my haunches and do the rooster pose. Then, he kicked me on my rear and repeatedly caned me all night long. I was injured and I pleaded to be let go. But they let me go only at 7 am after I was forced to sign a compromise,” he added.

Relatives took the injured man to Safdarjung Hospital and he was referred to AIIMs, said sources. The injured man’s brother said at AIIMS, doctors said it was a medico-legal case and police had to be informed first. “I told them that I could not call 100 because it was the 100 wale who beat my brother in the first place,” he added.

The man who was allegedly assaulted said,  “Never in my life have I been hit so badly as I was by Naresh. And I do not know why I was so cruelly beaten up.”

A senior police officer said, “We called Naresh to meet us. We are conducting an inquiry into why he behaved the way he did. He is known to be calm and temperate. He has never behaved in this manner earlier. We are trying to find out the reason.”
