Student found hanging in hostel

A 21-year-old dental student from Assam was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his hostel room in Ghaziabad, on Sunday night. The body has been sent for an autopsy, police said.

According to Superintendent of Police (Rural) Jagdish Sharma, the incident happened at 10 pm on Saturday in IDST college, Modinagar, Ghaziabad.

The student, who was identified as Adi Nupur Kashyap, belonged to the Biswanath Chariali tribe in Tezpur district of Assam.

He was pursing his Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and was in his fifth semester, police said.

“Kashyap shared the hostel room with another student. On Sunday night, he asked his friend to leave him alone for a while as he wanted to speak to his parents. When the friend returned, he found the room bolted from inside. He peeped inside the room from a ventilator and saw Kashyap hanging from the ceiling fan. He immediately raised an alarm and called his seniors for help,” a senior police officer said.

A group of students then broke the grille of the ventilator. One of them put his hand through the ventilator and unlocked the door from inside. Kashyap was brought down and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead, the officer said.

A suicide note was recovered from Kashyap’s room. “He has apologised to his parents for being a ‘loser’ and for letting them down. He also asked for their forgiveness,” the officer said.

Police are investigating all angles, including any possible racial discrimination that might have triggered the suicide.

However, an activist from a Delhi-based Assamese student organisation said, “On speaking to his friends, it seemed Kashyap was depressed over some love issue.”
