Two decades ago UNESCO declared April 29 as World Dance Day and ever since it’s been marked by celebrations all over the world. This year, the Indian leg of World Dance Day will be acknowledged with a five day extravaganza beginning from April 25-29 at the India Habitat Centre which will draw attention to the art of dance and its varied forms.

Kri Foundation, which has been working on increasing awareness in niche and avant-garde art forms,is organising the event. “Its mostly classical and contemporary dancers who will be performing,” says Arshiya Sethi,Founder,Kri,who’s been involved with Dance Day celebrations since 2004.

Dancer Rama Vaidyanathan will showcase the beauty of birds through Bharatnatyam. “The idea is to make people aware of the beauty of the birds so they feel the need to conserve their habitat. The Bharatanatyam idiom is well suited to portray their movements,” says Vaidyanathan, who makes a special reference to peacocks and has also taken lyrics from ancient Indian literature. But the festival isn’t limited to dance, itself. Kiran Seth, founder of Spic Macay will be discussing the future of dance in India and Chennai-based filmmaker Soudhamini will be showcasing her dance film as part of Danzlenz.

The five day event begins on April 25 at India Habitat Centre. For information contact 43663071
