Post their meteoric rise as the it-designers of Indian fashion, designer sisters Gauri and Nainika have been playing it particularly low key for the last few seasons. So it was a pleasant surprise to see them host a showcase of their fall 2010 collection at the open-air restaurant Cibo in Hotel Janpath,as a part of the ‘Grey Goose Journeys’ event. The four-city tour concluded in Delhi on Friday night, where the designers displayed 27 looks from their 1930s-inspired collection. “ People experiment with edgy patterns and styles,” said Gauri, dressed in a full-length free-flowing white gown,“but we still like to hold on to the traditional style, the vintage glamour of old Hollywood,” she adds.

The collection has been divided into two distinct styles: fluid light and breezy summer dresses, and opulent, lush and elegant evening gowns. The 27 designer dresses took them almost two months to complete, have their signature fabrics— silk, chiffon and velvet. The silhouettes are slender and flattering, combining subtlety and spectacle, while the colour palette moves from dramatic reds to blacks and blues. “Our clothes do have some modern day elements, but we generally stick to the elegant old world charm of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly,” says Nainika, dressed in a short white cocktail dress with rosette details. Rooting for the designers at the showcase were friends and fellow designers Varun Bahl,Rohit Bal,Rahul Khanna & Rohit Gandhi, and Namrata Joshipura.

Incidentally, the two will not be participating at the upcoming Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) for the second year in a row. “Last year Nainika got married,so we decided to take a break, and this year,we just didn’t feel interested,” said Gauri.
