Even as Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal filed their nomination papers for Delhi Assembly polls in the midst of much fanfare and aplomb on Wednesday, Congress candidate from New Delhi and former Delhi Minister Kiran Walia cut a lonely figure as she walked by herself to the nomination centre. Police officers in the area surrounded her as she smiled for the waiting cameras.

While supporters thronged Bedi’s road-show to the nomination centre, newly inducted BJP candidate from Patparganj Vinod Kumar Binny reached the centre around the same time. With all BJP supporters cheering for Bedi, the expelled AAP leader was seen waiting at the gate till Bedi — along with senior BJP leader and Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and East Delhi MP Maheish Girri — reached the venue. The two BJP candidates, later filed their nominations together.

Congress candidate from Greater Kailash and daughter of President Pranab Mukherjee, Sharmistha Mukherjee, evoked her father’s blessings before she filed her nomination. “I am sure my father’s goodwill is going to help me somewhere. Fulfilling people’s needs is a huge responsibility. Congress will re-emerge far strongly, that is why I joined the party,” she said.
After AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal’s nomination was delayed by a day due to the huge turnout of supporters at his road-show on Tuesday, other AAP candidates also claimed to have been similarly affected.

“Filed my nomination today. On 19.01.2015 i had got delayed like @ArvindKejriwal ji because of d procession. Need ur blessings n good wishes,” AAP candidate from Malviya Nagar Somnath Bharti tweeted.
Several leaders like BJP candidate from Janakpuri Jagdish Mukhi participated in prayer meetings before filing their papers.
Congress’s campaign committee chief Ajay Maken also filed his nomination on Wednesday. Prior to this, he travelled on an open jeep through his Sadar Baazar constituency — surrounded by hundreds of his followers, shouting Congress slogans and sporting flags. “When Kejriwal and Bedi were harbouring political ambitions and running a movement, I was preparing to send Suresh Kalmadi to jail. After joining the BJP, Kiran Bedi has forgotten about corruption,” he said.

While promising his electorate better management of electricity and water, he hit out at Bedi and said she lacks political acumen.
“She was a good cop. But political administration requires totally different abilities. It requires patience… and you have to be a good listener,” he said. Maken also inaugurated his election office at Shastri Nagar.
