The victim, identified as Harchandi Singh — a resident of DDA Flats in Munirka — sustained a neck injury after being attacked with a sharp object, they said.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 5.30 am, when Singh was approaching Gate No 8 of Deer Park, located opposite Africa Avenue Road.
In his statement to the police, Singh said, “I left home around 4.45 am for my morning walk. As I was about to reach Gate No. 8, a young man came towards me and asked if I had a mobile phone. When I said no, he pushed me into the bushes near the park wall and started searching my bag. He took out cash worth Rs 900 that I had kept inside a plastic packet, and also forcibly removed my…wristwatch from my hand.”
Singh further said that the attacker kept checking his own phone and repeatedly demanded Singh’s phone. “When I told him again that I did not have a phone, he attacked me on the neck with a knife-like object, causing bleeding. He then fled the spot,” he said.
After the elderly victim reached home, he informed his son, Lalit Singh, who immediately took him to Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, for treatment. Doctors prepared a medico-legal case and alerted the police. The attending doctor noted the injury as “simple” and described the cause as “an assault by a sharp object over the neck”.
A team of officers from Safdarjung Enclave police station subsequently reached the hospital. Upon learning that the patient had been discharged, the team visited his residence in Munirka.
The police later inspected the crime scene and called the forensics team. Based on the victim’s statement and medical report, a case under BNS Section 309(6) was registered at Safdarjung Enclave police station.
“An investigation has been taken up, and efforts are being made to identify and apprehend the accused,” an officer said. Singh also told the police that he would be able to identify the attacker. The police are scanning footage from CCTV cameras installed in the area and nearby places to trace the suspect.
