Quick and Easy

The newest laundromat facility in the city offers nearby college students the chance of a fancy wash with the lure of a cafe.

In India, mostly, washing clothes can be a very arduous exercise as a majority of the population still believes in pounding clothes mercilessly with a wooden bat for a clean wash. But off late, several laundromats — self service laundry facilities — have been mushrooming in the Capital. The latest,in Katwaria Sarai, has many educational institutes such as IIT and JNU in its vicinity.

As we approach the outlet,a blue board announces the name Quick Clean in vibrant fonts. A cafe greets us at the entrance, offering a selection of Chinese,Italian and Indian delicacies. The adjacent room has four large laundromats and three dryers. When we visited,on a weekday afternoon, there were hardly any customers.

At their busiest, the outlet registers 15-20 customers on weekends, which is a fair mix of young professionals, nearby university students and paying guests. After you proceed to weigh the clothes on the scale, you are given a swipe card in order to operate the machines. The clothes need to weigh a minimum of 5kg,which costs Rs 180. A member of staff assists you with the machine, that includes setting the temperature. There are few freebies on offer, such as your choice of detergents and softeners from the value added services section.

If you don’t have the patience to hang around while your clothes get washed, the management offers pick and drop facilities too, where the staff wash, dry, and deliver your clothes at your doorstep. The thing that sets this place apart from other outlets is the presence of a cafe and ironing facility. Seeing the comments left by visitors on the wall, one can gauge that the laundromat is much in favour by the residents.
