The Fee Committee of Panjab University on Monday recommended a 5-20 per cent fee hike for students in various colleges who will be enrolled in the first year of BA, BCom, MA and MSc from the next academic session, 2014-15.
The committee consists of representatives from various colleges affiliated to the varsity, and its meeting was chaired by Dean University Instruction A K Bhandari. The recommendations of the committee will be tabled in the next Syndicate meeting scheduled to be held in May, and thereafter in the Senate.
As per the recommendations, fee of only four courses — BA, BCom, MA and MSc — will be increased 20 per cent while no revision was proposed in the fee of self-financed courses. The recommendations also include an increase in the other charges of the university by less than 10 per cent.
The fee structure has only been revised for students of the colleges while no change has been made in the fee of students on the campus and in the regional centres.
“The decision was taken keeping in mind that the varsity has not increased the fee of any of the academic courses in the last six years. Fee of self-financed courses will remain the same, and the proposed increase in fee of other courses is quite minimal,” said Professor R P S Josh, a committee member.
The committee was constituted following the decision of the Senate on March 22, wherein Vice-Chancellor Arun Kumar Grover had announced that the issue would be referred to a new committee which would make a fresh proposal regarding fee hike.
The university had to cancel the recommendations of the former fee committee, which had proposed a hike of 20 per cent in regular courses and 10 per cent in self-financed courses. The proposal also included a fee hike of 10 per cent in the hostel fee as well as the examination fee. The decision was taken in the backdrop of the 27-day-long protest by the varsity students against the proposed fee hike.
