Actor Kamal Haasan on playing ten roles in the remake of the South Indian film Dasavatharam and his spunky daughter Shruti
Its been a while since he livened up the screen in Bollywood, but South Indian actor Kamal Haasan says he stayed away from Bollywood because of paucity of time and the lack of creativity in the scripts here. But thing,he says, look promising now. The general sensibility of films has improved in the past 10 years in Bollywood. I am inspired by many films off late, he says, adding that he will soon be doing a Tamil and Telugu remake of the Neeraj Pandey directed A Wednesday. But its not a Bollywood flick that has got him calling in on Delhi. Rather, its the promotion of his film,Dashavtar, the remake of his Tamil blockbuster Dasavatharam, directed by KS Ravikumar, that has got him to the capital. I like to portray multiple characters in my films, smiles Haasan, when we meet him at the Le Meridien,It is like performing the Bharatnatyam when one can play the demon and the king in the same act, he adds. Almost nine years after Haasan essayed the role of an ageing Brahmin in the 2000 Filmfare winning role,Hey Ram,he will be seen playing ten roles in the Hindi remake. The film is slated to release on April 17.
Although it is being released a year after its South India premiere,Haasan is positive about the film being well received in this part of the country as well. Since the script is entirely fresh and not inspired by any other film,it will work, says Haasan, who has also written the screenplay for the film.
The story of the film revolves around how various characters come together prior to the tsunami in 2004. Haasan plays a research scientist (Govindarajan Ramaswamy) who loses a biological weapon of mass destruction in the US. The weapon is also sought by an Ex-CIA officer (also played by Haasan) who wants the weapon for his own use. And when things start going wrong then various international organizations become players in a global cloak-and-dagger game. The story line is that things going wrong are made to be right, and it involves many people and countries, knowingly or unknowingly. The theory is that the world is not disjointed pieces of land, they are connected with each other, he explains.
Haasan plays a whole gamut of roles in the moviefrom former American President George Bush to the hero to the villain, the singer, the comic element and several others. The make up was the most difficult part of the film. I went to Los Angeles for 21 days where we did make up testing. There was a lot of logistics involved in the film, he says.
His daughter Shruti Haasan is ready to take the Bollywood plunge,in the film Luck opposite Imraan Khan and Haasan admits that,as a father,he is anxious for her success. She will have to work extra to prove her worth since she is carrying the burden of being my daughter. But she is an extra-ordinary girl and if I met her at an audition I would be impressed, he adds, the note of pride evident in his voice.
