On Tuesday, when Najeeb Jung took over as Delhis 20th Lieutenant-Governor,his predecessor Tejendra Khanna gave the swearing-in ceremony a miss.
Khanna who served as the L-G twice from 1997 to 1998 and from 2007 to 2013 had come under criticism for the Delhi Polices handling of the public outcry in the wake of the December 16 gangrape.
However, sources in the government said Khanna was under no compulsion to attend the swearing-in ceremony.
Khanna and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit have not shared the most cordial of associations, particularly after the gangrape incident. Then,Dikshit had frequently blamed the police for mishandling the situation and had even called for Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumars resignation.
Sources maintained that the duo also disagreed over the development of Delhi, particularly in the housing sector and in unauthorised colonies. The Lt-Governor is also the head of the Delhi Development Authority, which controls most of the land in the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
Dikshit denied there were any problems between them and said the L-G and the CM had clearly defined roles in the government and there was no lack of coordination.
