Security concerns prompt transfer of 99 officials from Delhi's Tihar jail. (File) The Delhi Prisons Department Thursday ordered the transfer of 99 officials to other jails in the city amid security concerns at Delhi’s Tihar jail. Last week, gangster Sunil Balyan alias Tillu Tajpuriya was stabbed to death allegedly by four inmates inside jail 8 in the “presence” of jail staffers, said officials.
After the killing, Director General of Prisons Sanjay Beniwal has been holding meetings with security agencies ITBP, CRPF and Tamil Nadu Special Force to chalk out new security arrangements and take punitive action against officers found negligent.
On Thursday, an order was released stating the transfer of the jail officials for better security arrangements. Jail officials said the transfer is a routine matter to prevent “malpractices” in jail and discourage any collusion of inmates with jail officials.
According to the order, 11 deputy superintendents, 12 assistant superintendents, 13 head wardens, 57 jail wardens, two head matrons, and four drivers were transferred to other jails. At least six jail officials from jail 8 and 9 have been transferred. The officials have already suspended seven Tamil Nadu SP jail officials from jail 8 for negligence.
“All the above-mentioned officers/officials hereby stand relieved with immediate effect with immediate effect without waiting for formal relieving from concerned jail/offices. Non-compliance with the order shall be viewed seriously…This issue with the approval of DG Prisons,” reads the order that has been signed by jail superintendent 1 of Prison Headquarters.
