‘No space’: Prosecutors begin protest

Demanding better infrastructure and office space at the newly unveiled court complex in Saket, public prosecutors in the Capital’s district courts observed the first day of their week-long protest by wearing black bands on their arms.

“The government is the largest litigant in courts, and we are appointed by them to handle their cases. They have treated us shabbily by not providing any space here,” said a prosecutor.

At least 10 prosecutors were seen sitting inside a courtroom after court hours, allotted no room or chamber in the new court complex. “The government complains of low conviction rates. How will prosecutors be motivated when they have no private space to brief our clients?” a prosecutor said. “The defence counsels have been given first-class facilities, while we have to stand outside the courtrooms to talk to our clients,” another prosecutor said.

Public Prosecutor Naresh Verma said,“The judges have residential areas and the lawyers have private chambers, while we have absolutely nothing in the new building. Half of the space provided to judges in the residential areas should be earmarked for us. Prosecution is the most important department in the criminal justice system.”

Anju Rathi Rana,Secretary of the Delhi Prosecutors’ Welfare Association said the protest will continue till a positive response from the government is received.
