Nano for Leno

Popular American TV chat show host Jay Leno is also well-known for having an exhaustive and impressive collection of automobiles. The newest addition to his fleet is Nano, the low (est)-cost Indian four-wheeler. To document the little car’s journey — from production to delivery at his garage, the TV host commissioned an “automobile mini-film”. The credits for the background score included former VJ,singer and occasional actor/anchor Sophie Choudry who has arranged the music for the mini-film. “It’s an honour to be a part of Jay Leno’s pet project and I’m glad that they used three of my songs for the film,” says Choudry. Apart from contributing to the music for the project,Choudry also dished out styling tips to Leno and got him to dress in a sherwani, courtesy ‘best friend’,Delhi-based designer,Manav Gangwani. “I suggested their team that they get Jay out of his usual denims and put him in a sherwani for this episode. They loved the idea and later invited Manav Gangwani to design it,” says the singer-actor,who says she looks forward to hosting the “television star” on his trip to India next year. “He arranged an Indian dance troupe in Los Angeles to welcome the car but I’ll be giving him a grand Indian welcome,” says Choudry.

A Sporting Event

Three spinal chord tumor surgeries and a life on the wheelchair could not stop 42-year-old Deepa Malik from undertaking a journey to the world’s highest motorable road in Khardung La on the Laddakh range a few months ago. All of it did not deter the Asian javelin record holder’s spirit from training for the Paralympics of the London Olympics 2012 and qualify for it either. On Friday,Mehta, who is an Asian Games medalist and India’s first paraplegic sportswoman to qualify for international events, met with school students at the grand finale of the British Council’s three week summer school in Delhi. She spoke to students, who demonstrated their teamwork, creativity and language skills through music, dance and theatre performances — all of which were based on the theme “The Olympics” at the British Council Theatre. Malik called the event a platform to share her experiences and spread awareness towards para sports. “This is a subject so close to my heart. It is a journey which I have been on for almost six years now,” said Malik.
