After a lifetime of translating books from English to French and vice versa,Simret Jandu,41,has launched herself in the art scene with her first solo show Introspections at the All India Fine Art and Craft Society. Her theme is Woman,a subject that has been likened to the moon. The development of mind of an individual has been compared to the waxing, waning and the full moon. Being a woman myself,it is the perspective and state of a woman that I can depict most sincerely, she says.
A painting titled Me,Mask and the Mirror shows a nude figure pulling a mask over her face as she turns towards a mirror, while the work titled Triple Moon Goddess Woman Playing Radha has a woman playing a flute while three crescent moons are interlocked in the background. These reflect a desire for self-realisation and the act of looking within oneself, says the artist.
Though a new artist,Jandu seems to have attracted the attention of collectors. A few European collectors were enthused enough to give me,not just the funds but also the fillip to paint more, she says. Her paintings have an echo of the Rajasthani miniatures but her technique is like that of the European Masters of oil on canvas.
The exhibition will start on August 1.
