Roohi Kapoors lush canvases are built by layering paint in thick coats in order to create an impressionist sea of colour. Created by dripping, glazing, scraping and brushing, her canvases are highly textured and possess depth and feeling. The figures are essayed by delineating generic forms without delving into their individual features. Potent in their ability to convey emotion, they lack a certain technical excellence that will perhaps come with time. Mindscapes is Kapoors second solo exhibition in the Capital and the young painter has already undertaken a collaboration with Ron Brinkers,a graphics and rug designer, who has translated Kapoors paintings into bold patterns. He has worked mainly with her figurative paintings like Cause and Effect, that depicts a road cutting its way through a bunch of skyscrapers and The Thinker and The Dreamer two works that capture the state of these two activities through the posture of the figure. The other works are mostly fields of colour that appear to undulate,as light plays over them. I have always enjoyed painting and drawing but after I signed up for experimental art workshops in India and Europe,I found myself hooked. My canvases are an attempt to unite the two worlds of my influences, says Kapoor, who sees her works as a bridge between India and Europe.
The show is on till November 6 at Stainless Gallery. Contact: 42603167
