Motorcycle-borne assailants open fire in crowded Bhajanpura market as shoppers watch

Two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants shot dead an area manager of a pharmaceutical company who tried to resist their attempt to snatch his wife’s bag and chain in Northeast Delhi’s Bhajanpura late on Friday night.

Police said the incident occurred around 9.30 pm in the crowded weekly market in Gali No. 8 in Bhajanpura, but no one came forward to help the victim.

Police said 29-year-old Ganesh Puri had gone to the market with his wife Mohini and six-month-old daughter Angel.

They stopped at a roadside stall for golgappas when, the police said, two persons came on a motorcycle and tried to snatch Mohini’s bag and chain.

Police said Puri caught hold of one of the snatchers and asked him to leave the bag. The accused then took out a pistol and shot at him.

Puri, however, did not let go of the snatcher, who then shot him in the abdomen. Police said Puri fell on the ground while the snatchers fled.

Despite the weekly Friday market and the subsequent rush,Mohini said no one came forward to their help. “Everyone watched like mute spectators,” she told Newsline.

Later, the police said,a youth rushed Puri to Guru Tegh Bahadur hospital in his car. “A lot of time was wasted in the hospital in police and hospital formalities instead of taking my husband to the ICU. He would have survived if timely treatment was given to him,” Mohini said.

Puri was operated upon for around three and a half hours but succumbed to his injuries at 4.30 am. After the postmortem, the body was handed over to the family. The family later took the body to Agra,Puri’s native place, for cremation.

Police said Puri worked with Apex Pharmaceuticals in Karampura as area manager. He had shifted to Delhi seven years ago and had moved to his Bhajanpura D block rented accommodation seven months ago. The Bhajanpura police have registered a murder case but no arrests have been made so far.
