Man feared dead after being thrown into Yamuna in high-speed collision; wife and infant injured

A 35-year-old tech professional is feared to be dead after being thrown into the Yamuna following a high-speed collision on the Kalindi Kunj bridge in New Delhi on Friday night, while his wife and 10-month-old daughter were injured in the crash, police said on Sunday.

According to the police, Mohammad Shami, who hailed from Uttarakhand’s Haldwani city, and his family were returning home to Abul Fazal Enclave near Shaheen Bagh after visiting a relative in Noida when their motorcycle was hit from behind by a speeding car around 8.30 pm.

Shami was flung over the guardrail and into the river by the impact of the collision while his wife Arshi Rafiq, 30, and daughter sustained spinal and leg fractures, respectively, the police said, adding that they were currently under treatment.

A search operation involving police, divers, and a boat club rescue team has been underway since Friday night to locate Shami, an officer said. He added that the driver of the car that caused the accident might have been under the influence of alcohol.

“An FIR was registered against the car driver under sections 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Kalindi Kunj police station. He has been identified and efforts are underway to nab him,” the police officer said.
