Barcelona 1992 witnessed one of the most emotional moments in Olympic history. British athlete Derek Redmond collapsed midway through the 800m event with a torn hamstring. As volunteers rushed to help him get off the track,Redmond pushed them away as he attempted to complete the race. Security officials stood aside as his father rushed to Redmond’s aid. Hobbling forward in obvious pain,Redmond made it to the finish line using his father for a crutch,as 65,000 spectators stood up in applause. The moment found an echo at Sydney 2000. Eric ‘the eel’ Moussambani from little known Equatorial Guinea strove to finish the 100m freestyle event at twice the timing of the winner,a good while after all his competitors had cleared the pool.
