In last 6 months, Gurgaon sold liquor worth Rs 1,842 crore
During the auction for vends under Haryana’s excise policy for 2023-24 — rolled out on June 12 — there was a rush by bidders to set up stores in areas close to Delhi.

At the end of the first two quarters, the Gurgaon excise department has sold liquor worth Rs 1,842 crore, officials said.
According to Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner (West) Amit Bhatia, the district has sold liquor worth Rs 1,842 crore over the last six months, meaning liquor worth Rs 300 crore was being consumed every month. “Rs 1,518 crore was collected from liquor sales in the east and west zones in the district. This is a 20% increase from last year’s collection for six months,” Bhatia said.
Moreover, with the next auctioneering to begin in three months, the department is hopeful that the entire collection would be over 20% higher than last year, he added. “By then, we will have enough revenue during auctions,” he said.
Gurgaon is divided into four zones. In the last auction, after Delhi’s new excise policy was revoked, there was an increase in customers which led to such competition in the industry that licence fees of zones shot up by over 50% during the auction, an official had said.
During the auction for vends under Haryana’s excise policy for 2023-24 — rolled out on June 12 — there was a rush by bidders to set up stores in areas close to Delhi. This led to an increase in the auctioned amount in zones near the border as compared to last year.
An officer had said the excise department was conducting routine checks to check spurious liquor. As a result, police also ramped up action against such vends.
