Improving education for a better nation

The Quest asks students of Delhi schools what they would do if they were given a chance to be the Prime Minister of India for a day.

As the Prime Minister of the country,I would bring fundamental institutional, structural, functional and organisational changes to the three pillars — the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary. I would ensure recruitment of people with integrity into police and CBI,increase in the number of judges and courts and ensure a verdict on every single case filed within 3 months. As for the Legislature,I would place laws for debarring criminals, introduce a system of compulsory voting and create consensus among the political parties to increase accountability, transparency and productivity through comprehensive legislation. My plan will be to strengthen the RTI,pass the Lokpal Bill and put an end to corruption. Real freedom,as Gandhiji said, will only come when the poorest of the poor will be happy and that would be my sole goal.

If I was given a chance to become the Prime Minister for a day,I would like to bring about several changes. I would try to ensure that every citizen contributed equally for the country’s progress. I would provide free education for the poor and financial support to educational institutions to ensure better education. I would make laws against corruption and establish a helpline for the complaint against cases related to corruption, where the identity of the person would be kept anonymous. I would also make strict laws to deal with people who try to manipulate the complaints. A better life would be made available to all citizens.

India is one of the largest democracies. To reduce corruption and scams,I would promote people to get elementary education so that people are more informed about corruption and how it affects our country and its government. This will definitely lead to the betterment of the country. To decrease corruption,I would also implement RTI more strictly in all government branches so that people become more honest in their work. The next change that I would bring would be to better the quality of food served in the government schools to overcome malnutrition.

The first and foremost thing that I would do is question the current system regarding college admissions. The deteriorating quality of this process must be rectified. The main objective would be to ban the current quota system. I would like to observe the functioning of the Cyber Crime Department. Since the rate of crime is rising every day,I would like to know how much India has advanced as a country in terms of fighting crime. To help the department,I would ensure that the latest technology is made available to track criminals. I would also take an initiative to improve the sanitation and reduce the chaos caused on roads by rains. Recruitment of more traffic personnel and stricter laws would not allow citizens to bend the rules according to their will. In terms of sanitation, more garbage sites would be made available for disposal of garbage.

I love my country and if I were the Prime Minister of this country,I would want to do something very good for my motherland to maker her proud. I would work to make this the numer one nation. I would look into every major and minor problem which hampers with development. Most of the problems faced by this country is in the rural areas. I would look into every village and small town for the development of the common man. Another major issue which I would fix is corruption. Most importantly,I would look into the complaints of every citizen and would give them highest priority. A good and happy life would be given to every Indian citizen.

Our Prime Minister is someone who has authority, but it comes with a cost. He is held responsible for everything happening in India,be it the progress or the downfall of the country. If I get a chance to be the Prime Minister of India,I would plug the many gaps that hinder our development,be it poverty, discrimination, lack of trust, education, harmony, strong governance. Yet my priority would be to build educational institutions and hospitals in rural areas for a healthy and enlightened society. Steps would be taken to change the mindset of those people who think that educating girls is a waste of time and money. I would also take steps to build homes for the homeless. Last, but not the least,I would ensure that harmony and brotherhood is established among the citizens. For “India is my country and all Indians are my brothers and sisters…”

I would try my level best to give the Indian citizens a happy, safe, and successful life.First of all,I would take steps to facilitate books, uniform, education fund to the needy rather than providing them poison in the form of food as a result of corruption because education is the only path to an industrialized, modernized and developed India. At the same time I would implement policies to preserve our ancient traditions and distinctive culture which is discarding day by day. I would take steps to erase each and every mark of unemployment and the great evil, corruption from our country. I would take strict and quick steps to improve our infrastructure in our small towns as well as villages so that the country develops uniformly. I would try to make India strongest in each field and strive to spread the message of peace in the country.

Becoming the Prime Minister for a day would be like holding a magic wand and exert influence. If ever I get such an opportunity,I would like to bring changes in the field of education as I feel that the free will of children has been completely destroyed. The area of higher education has been pampered but the sphere of primary education, which lays the foundation of the country’s literacy has been neglected totally. I would lay greater stress on primary education and make higher education a choice for the children and that also only according to their choice and merit. I would not allow any admissions in the institutes of higher education on the basis of just donations and reservations.

If I become the Prime Minister of India for a day,I would strive hard to restore people’s faith in government. One cannot do much in a day,but one can always make a start, signalling the intent for hard decisions. I can effect changes in the judicial system of our country, because right now, there are over 43 lakh cases pending in the courts. I would also tackle corruption, starting from the top. Right now,India’s crusade against corruption has not resulted in anything,as evidenced by the fact that it is paced at 94th position in the Transparency International’s CPI,out of 176 countries. I would try to do what Anil Kapoor did in the movie Nayak, take quick decisions, and ensure their effective implementation. I would also instil the fear of the rule of law among people.

If I will be given such an opportunity, then I would try my level best to burn the midnight oil and amend the most corrupt of systems. Actually, not much can be done even after comanding all the powers because the main drawback of our system does not lie with corrupt officials but with people having corrupt mindsets . The same goes for women’s security, even if I was able to pass strict legislation to prevent such crimes .Then it would go useless because it is never the fear of going behind the bars or getting punished that controls crimes but the value of realising the dignity of your fellows deeds. I believe that can never be forcefully imposed  on anybody. Instead of improving the situation I would launch life skill, dignity and disciplinary workshops for the youth,as I consider that a person cannot be changed by fear, but by making him realise where has he gone wrong.

If by the grace of God,I was made the Prime Minister of India for a day,my first priority would be the maintenance of law and order and strict discipline in the country. It would be my prime duty to provide security to the people. Those who commit crimes and give shelter to terrorists would be given capital punishment. The good governance would create a sense of relief to common man. My second goal would be to arrange for employment for all in the government or private or self employment categories. This would need the introduction of value based education system. The education up to Class XII would be free for all in the country. My preference would be to make college and higher education free for meritorious and deserving students without any reservation on the basis of caste, creed and religion. My third priority would be to maintain harmonious relations with the neighbouring countries. Our country needs to play a prominent role in the Asian continent and the world.

“One positive man is a one-man army” – Anon. That is what I plan to follow,if I become the Prime Minister for a day. Firstly, instead of establishing the ever so practical ‘Right to Food’,I would formulate the ‘Right to Skill Learning’ which allows unemployed /uneducated adults to receive free vocational training for menial jobs. This training could be integrated into the national policy regarding adult-education. As they say,“Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; show him how to catch fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. Secondly,I would only extend reservations in higher education,on the sole parameter of the candidate’s ‘present’ economic condition. Many well-off OBC/SC students take unfair advantage of their caste,at the expense of a deserving individual whose only mistake was to be born with the wrong last name.
