Delhi’s commercial hubs, including Karol Bagh, Lajpat Nagar, and Rajouri Garden, are among 312 markets that have been identified by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for a night sweeping initiative. The move announced on Tuesday aims to improve cleanliness across the city and follows the implementation of a similar nighttime sweeping operation in the Chandni Chowk Market.
“We have instructed officials that just as Chandni Chowk is cleaned at night, a similar approach will now be adopted for all 312 markets marked under the MCD. Each Deputy Commissioner has been directed to appoint a nodal officer for every market, who will be responsible for overseeing cleanliness and addressing any issues,” said Mayor Mahesh Kumar Khichi at a press conference. His remarks came after he addressed a meeting with officers from all 12 MCD zones, which included the Deputy Commissioners.
To facilitate communication and accountability, the contact details of the nodal officers will be shared with market heads, and vice versa, allowing for the resolution of any challenges that could arise, the Mayor said. Deputy Mayor Ravinder Bharadwaj added, “Boards will be installed in each market, displaying the names and contact numbers of both the nodal officer and the sanitation workers.”
The number of markets per zone varies, with some having as many as 12 and others around five. “This is being done in accordance with Arvind Kejriwal ji’s vision of a clean Delhi,” Khichi said.
