The online art enterprise Fuschia Tree held a talent hunt called Fuschia Futures for young, happening artists across the country, with 10 lucky winners spotted at the end of the search. The winning art spans a variety of genres, from Delhi-based Bara Babu Mahatos fibreglass sculptures to the caricature-like characters by Gauri from Allahabad and pen-and-inks from Patna-based Rajesh Kumar Rajan. The winners will be showcased at a group exhibition in Mumbai and furthermore a solo show will be hosted for each of the artists.
Chanda Chaudhary Barrai, founder of The Fuschia Tree, says in a time of disillusionment its important to support and give talent an opportunity. We were looking for artists who would move beyond formula and have the conviction to create something original, says the jet-setting entrepreneur who moves between Delhi,London and Hong Kong . We also keep the art accessible by making sure that none of the works is above Rs 50,000. This is to initiate new collectors into picking up art.
Moving beyond the big daddies and creating a pool of young talent is something that Art India and Bodhi Art Award attempted to do,however the latter ended up becoming a stressful and exploitative exercise since the artists on contract with Bodhi were expected to churn out a given number of art works for the gallery. Since our project is funded by an international organisation, the artists are under no pressure to make works to be sold in the market. We really want to create a laboratory for free thinking and creativity till they are ready to go solo, says Barrai.
