Heavy rain alert: Gurgaon admin advises offices to WFH, schools to hold online classes today

Gurgaon District Commissioner Ajay Kumar on Monday asked corporate offices and private institutions to consider allowing employees to work from home, and schools to hold online classes on Tuesday amid a forecast of heavy rain.

The advisory on Monday comes as an orange alert has been issued for the district.

The Haryana state government has also directed all field officers, including divisional commissioners, range IGPs/ADGPs, deputy commissioners, superintendents of police, and sub-divisional magistrates, to remain at their stations until September 5. Officers have been instructed to maintain close vigilance. It stated that no leave will be granted without prior approval from the State Chief Secretary or the Additional Chief Secretary (Home).

The district saw over 100 mm of rain in some parts between 3 pm and 7 pm on Monday, with Wazirabad tehsil in Gurgaon recording 116 mm between 8 am and 6 pm.

Bouts of rain throughout the day on Monday also led to waterlogging at several locations.

The Gurugram Municipal Corporation and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GDMA), meanwhile, took to social media and stated that deploying workforce to clean drains and road gullies, and suction pumps in key stretches were among steps taken to tackle the situation.

“GMDA team is monitoring on-ground conditions; pump sets & manpower deployed to support swift discharge of storm water. Citizens can submit their waterlogging grievances on helpline number 1800-180-1817 & WhatsApp number 7840001817,” a post on X read.

The Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam said that electricity supply in Gurgaon remained normal despite continuous rainfall. “Officers have been deployed at every substation in both operation circles to ensure uninterrupted power distribution. Precautions have been taken due to ongoing rain to prevent any incidents in any area,” a spokesperson said.
