Happy New You

My friend was almost hoarse with the cursing when she scuttled in holding up a Burberry slip-on accusingly.

My friend was almost hoarse with the cursing when she scuttled in holding up a Burberry slip-on accusingly. This was the fourth time in three years she had taken it to her trusted cobbler for a fix-it and she was still skidding on it. “That’s it,I am never wearing shoes that haven’t been made in Italy again,” she swore. And she had the New Year’s resolution both of us had been playfully searching for since early November.

New Year resolutions are for all of us,even the cynics who resolve not to resolve. It gives us that magical panacea of our entire existence: Hope. ‘Hope’ is said to be the most overused word in politics these days, right up there with ‘change’,but both uphold a promise of something shiny and new. And isn’t that what fashion is all about?

An epicure will tell you,you are what you eat. A book fiend will argue, you are what you read. I have always insisted your wardrobe choices hold a mirror to your personality; I have a few sociologists backing me on this.

So while most resolve to eat healthier, give up smoking, read more, watch more movies, learn to cook and leave office an hour earlier each day, there are millions of people who choose to clean out their closet and evolve their style with each passing year. Many will aim at an ethical lifestyle — wear clothes that are made from pure and organic fabric and don’t exploit labour. Others will buy less,or none at all (remember The Uniform Project, where a girl wears a single outfit in 365 ways?).

Here are some of my favourites:
Roohi Jaikishan (businesswoman)
: “I will not wear or carry anything that’s instantly recognisable but will choose items that are quiet, but luxurious.”

Anaita Shroff (stylist): “To learn to carry small sling bags, even to work.”

Arti Surendrenath (ad honcho): “Having learned the hard way since I tore a ligament on my leg,I will shed the pounds gained over the years and enjoy high heels. I will cut my hair short and work on a look that’s saucy and elegant, but will never be a victim of fashion.”

Sravanya Rao (interior designer): “I’m marinating in happy colours.”

Anju Chulani (homemaker): “To make an effort not to wear black.”

Sujata Assomul (magazine editor): “Buy pieces that fit into my existing wardrobe and don’t require me to shop more to turn my purchase into an outfit.”

Tarun Tahiliani (designer): “To further the artisanal connection of Indian fashion. This is our heritage, our luxury and our future.”

Varun Bahl (designer): “To do less shows and open more stores.”

And finally,Diandra Soares (model): “Bright red hair and a ripped body.”

Last year,I decided to wear more saris but regretfully wore only one (that too last week, after reminding myself of the resolution). I don’t think the idea of making New Year resolutions is to etch them in stone,to be fulfilled at gunpoint. It’s more about telling yourself you are open to change and are willing to try or learn something new. And that itself will ensure you a happy new year.
