Art exhibitions themed around Independence Day in the city range from quirky political cartoons by Tanmaya Tyagi to the metaphysically motivated Chakra series by bureaucrat K Subramaniam. Both exhibitions are on at the Lalit Kala Akademi till August 20. Another group exhibition uses the motif of kites to express the spirit of freedom and features artists like Sudip Roy,Kanchan Chandra,Krishna Dutta,Laxman Aeley and Manoj Dutta. The exhibition is on at the Chawla Art Gallery at the Square One Mall till August 20.
Tyagis cartoons,on the other hand, take a critical look at issues like inflation and the increasing trend of using religion as a political tool. My cartoons are for the common man and I believe that one can say very serious things through humour, says Tyagi.
For Sudip Roy the kite is a symbol of freedom. The kite that I have painted depicts Radha and Krishna, symbolising love and peace. Through my painting I want love and peace to fly high, for in todays time it is more important to condemn violence, he says.
Musician and songwriter Raghu Dixit, who is known for amalgamating Indian ethnic folk with other styles from across the world is all set to launch a single on the theme of Independence Day today. The song titled Chala Hai Tiranga will be released today on artistaloud.com and will be available for download. T he song is very different from what I do usually. There is no jingoism or cliched nationalism and its not like a war cry. It is a simple ditty that tries to bring alive the glory and magic of the tricolour, says Dixit, who has sung the song apart from arranging the music and mixing it.
