Police completed the formalities over five hours, from 11 am to 4 pm.
As Jitender Singh Tomar was arrested amid high drama on Tuesday, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supporters alleged that the former law minister had been tricked by police.
Up to a hundred supporters stood outside the Vasant Vihar Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) office, where police detained and then arrested Tomar. Police completed the formalities over five hours, from 11 am to 4 pm.
“They tricked our leader into being arrested. Our leader comes and sits in his Trinagar office every morning. He did the same on Tuesday. A police team, however, arrived at his office around 10.30 am. The men in uniform told him they wanted to see his papers. Tomar said they were at his home. When Tomar sat in his car, police told his driver to get off. They literally hijacked the car and drove him to the police station. Police knew that if they arrested him at his office, people would not have let them take Tomar with them. They tricked us,” AAP worker Raj Singh Duggal, waiting outside the AATS office, said.

Supporters and mediapersons stood outside the AATS office for hours while Tomar was being questioned inside. Heavy police arrangements had been made. Police personnel armed with anti-riot gear like teargas shells and lathis stood behind dividers, cordoning off the entrance to the AATS office.
Confusion ensued in the morning when AAP leaders Ashutosh, Kumar Vishwas and Amanatullah reached the Hauz Khas police station, protesting there. They then drove to the Vasant Vihar AATS office though they were not allowed to meet Tomar. Ashutosh said, “Tomar was not notified about the arrest. The issue of the degrees is in court. Then, how can police arrest him? And if he is proven innocent then will the L-G, police and Modi apologise?”
