An elderly couple was held captive for over an hour by five armed men at their Greater Kailash-I home in South Delhi and robbed of cash and valuables worth lakhs of rupees in the early hours on Saturday, police said.

The incident was reported around 3.15 am on Saturday. The couple — S P Bansal (65) and his wife Sneha (65) — both heart patients, stay on the ground floor, while their two sons live on the first and second floors with their families.

The gang of five, wearing shorts and vests, entered the Bansal household in B Block by scaling the boundary wall of the colony. They initially tried to break into the neighbouring house, but after failing to do so,targeted the Bansal household.

“One of them asked for the gold ring I was wearing. I was too scared and fumbled while trying to take it out. One of them then threatened to chop my finger off if I did not hurry,” said Sneha Bansal. The couple was still traumatised more than 12 hours after the incident.

“The robbers broke the lock of the main gate, and then a second locked gate. There is a staircase leading to the floors above and an entry point to the ground floor. The robbers first went to the first floor and locked it from outside, then returned to the ground floor. They entered the bedroom of my parents and put a knife across my father’s neck. One of them forced my mother to open the almirah. They threatened to kill my parents if they raised an alarm,” said Bhaskar Bansal, their son.

The Bansals said Rs 1 lakh, five diamond rings, silver coins and gold are missing. The family runs a CA firm in Bengali Market and has been living in the area for 25 years.

“We have detained a few persons. The family had not employed a guard. We suspect the involvement of an insider, who must have passed on information to the robbers,” said Virender Singh Chahal,JCP (Southeast).
