I didnt feel any guilt when I raped her, a 35-year-old man convicted of rape said while stoically describing the incident. He is one of the convicts that documentary filmmaker Lavlin Thadani spent nearly four-years with to uncover the mind of a rapist.
Rape Compounded, her documentary,is based on interviews of rape convicts lodged in Tihar Jail, rape victims and experts. The film also traces, among others, the story of a 14-year-old mentally challenged girl who was raped and the difficulties her family faced in filing a report against the accused.
It was my moral duty as a citizen and filmmaker to spread awareness about rape. I was unable to see the pain and humiliation suffered by rape victims. I hope the film motivates lawmakers to formulate more stringent laws for punishing people accused in rape cases, Thadani said.
Almost 90 per cent of rape cases go unreported due to the involvement of a family member, she said.
The series of interviews knitted together also touch upon the story of a victim who was raped for two years by her domestic help when she was only nine years old. After so many years,I still live in constant fear, the victim said.
One prisoner also shared his grief: My family completely neglected me after I committed the crime. They didnt even file for bail,as they were disgusted by my act and now I am feeling guilty for what I did.
The film was screened at the Indian Habitat Centre on Thursday, and the former DG of Tihar Jail,Dr Kiran Bedi,National Commission for Women chairperson Dr Girija Vyas and Gopal Subramaniam were chief guests on the occasion.
The film also asks pertinent questions such as whether seven years of punishment are enough in rape cases.
