Easy win for Manipur boys

It was surely a lesson in attack for the youngsters from Tamil Nadu when the team from St John's higher secondary school,Tirunelveli,went down 3-9 to NCC B Directorate,Manipur,in a group match of the 40th Nehru junior hockey tournament on Monday.

Not only were the boys from Manipur much fitter and stronger,they also ran circles around the Tamil Nadu team,scoring at will through the match,even though they were the slower team off the mark.

In fact,St John’s started on the right note,taking lead in the fourth minute itself through a penalty stroke that Sunil Murthy converted. Manipur leveled through M Bronson Singh in the 17th minute. St John’s went ahead two mintues later through M Karthick and made it 3-1 through J Karthick in the 24th minute. But thereafter,it was all about Manipur,who seemd to have decided they had had enough of sizing up their opponents and warming up to the competition.

Manipur slammed in three quick goals in nine minutes to go ahead 4-3 at half time. Amarjit Singh converted a penalty corner while Kh. Sanjoymani and Bronson added one each. Post break,Manipur slotted in five more,dominating completely with St John’s unable to even reach the opposition circle. Itomba Singh,Ksh. Wangamba,Bronson,Amarjit and Kh. Dhananjoy Singh scored to round up the tally.

In another group match of the tournament,Satguru Partap Singh Academy,Bhaini Sahib,Ludhiana managed to edge past Guru Harkishan Public School,India Gate by a solitary goal. Gurpreet Singh scored the winner in the 52nd minute,taking advantage of a momentary defensive lapse by the Delhi school.
